Rakuten referral bonus: how the invite, the spend minimum and the payout work

The invite page for this link says the friend gets a $50 bonus when they spend $50. The footnote adds the conditions: a new member, qualifying orders totaling at least $50, within 90 days of becoming a member, in the 50 United States or D.C. Rakuten also says the offer may be modified or cancelled at any time.

The number rotates. Rakuten's own help page says bonus amounts change from time to time and that the referred person gets the bonus available on the day they sign up. If the invite page shows a different amount when you open it, that amount replaces the one above.

Rakuten also advertises welcome offers on its main pages without any invite. Those are separate promotions with their own amounts and spend minimums, and they differ from the invite offer and change over time. Open both the invite page and the regular sign-up page, compare the bonus and the spend needed, and use the one with the better terms for what you were going to buy anyway.

Rakuten says the friend has to make a purchase, or a few, that qualifies for Cash Back within the timeframe of the bonus. The practical meaning is that the order must go through Rakuten and be at a store that pays Cash Back. A purchase made without activating Rakuten first earns nothing and does not count.

Stores have their own exclusions, and some categories do not pay. Check the terms on the store's Cash Back activation page before you buy.

Rakuten says that when a referred person signs up and makes a qualifying purchase, both people can earn a reward. It also says the purchase requirement and reward amount can vary, and that the most current promotion is on the Refer-A-Friend page.

Members each get a unique link there, and the same page has a "My Referral Activity" view that shows pending, earned and expired referrals.

Bonuses follow the same schedule as Cash Back. Rakuten pays every three months, on February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15. Your friend's purchase first has to be confirmed by the store, which typically takes 3 to 14 weeks to allow for returns and exchanges. If the confirmation lands after a payment date, the bonus rolls to the next one.

You can choose how to be paid: a Big Fat Check, PayPal or Bilt Points. Eligible American Express members can choose Membership Rewards points instead. You need at least $5.01 in confirmed earnings before a payment date, or the balance carries over.

Joining in early October and buying within a week might look like this. The store confirms the Cash Back in December or January. The bonus is paid on the next quarterly date after that, which would be February 15. That is the mechanism, and individual timing depends on the store.

The 90-day window applies to when the orders must be placed. The confirmation period is separate and comes after.

• The account was not new. Rakuten says referred members have to be new to Rakuten.
• The order was placed outside the 90-day window.
• The spend was under the minimum after returns or exclusions.
• You shopped without activating Cash Back through Rakuten.
• The offer changed. Rakuten may modify or cancel it.
• The confirmation is still pending. Pending referrals show as pending until Cash Back is confirmed.

Rakuten says confirmed Cash Back can be redeemed for a gift card within minutes, with at least $5 in confirmed earnings. It also says this option is available to select members and subject to limits.
